France: 17 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
Metropolitan France spans four Palearctic characters: European Atlantic mixed forests and Western European broadleaf forests over the oceanic lowlands, the Pyrenees conifer and mixed forests and Alps conifer and mixed forests in the mountains, and Mediterranean forests, woodlands and scrub along the south, including the Northeast Spain and Southern France Mediterranean forests and the Corsican montane broadleaf and mixed forests. Overseas territories then add a Neotropic and Afrotropic layer - Guianan lowland moist forests, Caribbean moist and dry forests, mangroves, and the Mascarene and Comoros forests. The mainland gardening consequence is a clean split: mild, moist Atlantic conditions suiting broadleaf woodland plants in the north and west, and summer-dry sclerophyllous conditions in the south where drought-adapted Mediterranean species belong.
