Faroe Islands

Faroe Islands: one ecoregion. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

The Faroe Islands sit within a single ecoregion of their own: the Faroe Islands boreal grasslands, a small temperate grassland system in the North Atlantic, ranked Nature Imperiled. The name says what a visitor sees - treeless slopes of grass and heath under a cool, wet, relentlessly windy oceanic climate, where the ocean keeps winters mild for the latitude but summers never get warm. Gardening here is a study in shelter: wind, salt spray, and the short cool season limit what stands unprotected, and anything woody generally needs a wall or a hollow to establish. Hardy grasses, cushion plants, and tough northern perennials suit the open ground; the islands' native grassland flora, adapted to exactly these conditions, is the most reliable guide.
