Ethiopia

Ethiopia: 10 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Ethiopia's ten ecoregions sort neatly by elevation. The highlands carry three of their own: Ethiopian montane forests, Ethiopian montane grasslands and woodlands, and, on the highest ground, Ethiopian montane moorlands - cool, temperate-feeling country despite the tropical latitude. Around them the lowlands are dry: the Somali Acacia-Commiphora bushlands and thickets and Horn of Africa xeric bushlands to the east and south, the Sahelian Acacia savanna and East Sudanian savanna to the west, Djibouti xeric shrublands and Masai xeric grasslands and shrublands at the margins, with the Sudd flooded grasslands touching the far west. Growing conditions therefore hinge on altitude more than latitude; the montane belts support cool-climate crops and gardens, while lowland planting means drought-adapted acacias, succulents, and thicket shrubs.
