El Salvador

El Salvador: 5 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Five Neotropic ecoregions fit inside El Salvador, all tropical, arranged by elevation and coast. Central American dry forests dominate the lowlands, giving the country its defining wet-dry seasonal rhythm, while the Central American pine-oak forests take the middle elevations and small areas of Central American montane forests and Sierra Madre de Chiapas moist forests hold the cooler heights. The Pacific shore carries the Southern Mesoamerican Pacific mangroves, an ecoregion already half protected. The planting consequence is a country where drought tolerance matters more than heat tolerance: dry-forest trees and shrubs suit most ground, pines and oaks mark the cooler slopes, and genuinely moist conditions are confined to the highest terrain and the coastal wetlands.
