Dominica

Dominica: one ecoregion. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Dominica belongs entirely to the Windward Islands moist forests, the tropical moist broadleaf forest ecoregion of the volcanic Lesser Antilles, assessed as able to reach half protected. On this island the ecoregion shows its fullest expression: high volcanic terrain intercepts the trade winds, sustaining genuinely wet forest from coast to mountain interior in a way the low limestone islands of the region cannot. The growing character is warm, humid, and generous, with rainfall and cloud increasing sharply with elevation. That suits moisture-loving tropical broadleaf plants almost everywhere - understory and canopy species alike - while the practical gradients for planting are wind exposure on the coasts and the cooler, wetter conditions of the mountain slopes rather than any shortage of rain.
