Cyprus

Cyprus: one ecoregion. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

One ecoregion covers Cyprus completely: the Cyprus Mediterranean forests, a Palearctic Mediterranean forest, woodland, and scrub system that is the island's own. That single classification is an accurate portrait - hot, dry summers, mild wet winters, pine and cypress woodland on the Troodos and Kyrenia ranges, and maquis and garrigue shrubland across the lowlands. Gardening here is Mediterranean gardening in its concentrated form: winter is the growing and planting season, summer drought is the test, and the reliable palette is the region's own olives, carobs, junipers, cistus, and bulbs that rest through the heat. The ecoregion rates Nature Imperiled, so the surviving native woodland and shrubland matter, and gardens built from their species need little irrigation to look at home.
