Croatia: 4 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Croatia's crescent shape gives it four distinct ecoregions. The inland plains of Slavonia lie in the Pannonian mixed forests, a temperate broadleaf and mixed forest system with continental winters; the mountainous spine carries the Dinaric Mountains mixed forests; and the Adriatic coast and islands belong to the Mediterranean biome, split between the Tyrrhenian-Adriatic sclerophyllous and mixed forests and the Illyrian deciduous forests. The practical divide is the Dinaric crest: seaward of it, mild wet winters and dry summers favor olives, evergreen oaks, and drought-adapted shrubs; landward, gardens face frost, snow, and a continental season closer to central Europe's. Few countries offer so sharp a Mediterranean-continental boundary in so short a distance.
