Comoros

Comoros: one ecoregion. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

The Comoros forests ecoregion covers the entire country - a small Afrotropic unit of tropical moist broadleaf forest confined to this volcanic archipelago between Madagascar and the African mainland, and assessed as able to recover. Its island isolation within the Afrotropic realm is what makes it a distinct ecoregion at all rather than an extension of a continental forest. The character is warm and humid year-round, with volcanic slopes catching moisture and supporting wet forest upward from the coasts. For planting, this is generous tropical ground: moist-forest trees, understory plants, and spice and fruit crops of the humid tropics all suit it, with the meaningful local variables being elevation on the volcano slopes and exposure on the drier leeward coasts.
