Cameroon

Cameroon: 12 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Cameroon runs the full gradient from the edge of the Sahara to equatorial rainforest, which is why twelve ecoregions meet here. The dry north belongs to the Sahelian Acacia savanna and East Sudanian savanna, with the Lake Chad flooded savanna at the basin floor; the humid south is tropical moist broadleaf forest, the Northwest Congolian lowland forests, Congolian coastal forests, and Cross-Sanaga-Bioko coastal forests, fringed by Central African mangroves. Between them sits a broad forest-savanna transition. The Cameroon Highlands forests and the tiny Mount Cameroon and Bioko montane forests add a cooler mountain tier. Growers work in essentially two countries: a Sahelian north where drought tolerance is everything, and a wet forested south where warmth and rainfall are constant and drainage matters more than irrigation.
