Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso: 2 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Two great Afrotropic savanna belts divide Burkina Faso between them. The north belongs to the Sahelian Acacia savanna, an enormous ecoregion of sparse, thorny, drought-built vegetation at the desert's edge, while the south lies in the West Sudanian savanna, classed as imperiled, where taller grasses and denser woodland reflect a longer rainy season. Both are tropical grassland and savanna biomes, so the whole country shares one rhythm - a single wet season and a long, hot dry one - differing mainly in how much rain the wet season delivers. Planting reality tracks that gradient directly: hardy acacia-type trees and deep-rooted drought specialists in the Sahelian north, with a broader range of savanna trees, shrubs, and crops possible toward the moister south.
