Botswana

Botswana: 8 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Every one of Botswana's eight ecoregions is grassland, savanna, or drier still. The Kalahari xeric savanna is much the largest presence, backed by Kalahari Acacia woodlands, Central bushveld, and the Zambezian mopane, Baikiaea, and Zambezian-Limpopo mixed woodlands toward the wetter north and east. Two flooded systems break the pattern: the Zambezian flooded grasslands, which include the Okavango's seasonal wetlands, and the salt-crusted Makgadikgadi halophytics. Rainfall is seasonal and unreliable across the whole country, so planting leans on deep-rooted, drought-dormant trees - acacias, mopane, and their companions - and on grasses that ride out long dry spells. Several of these ecoregions rate Half Protected or close to it, a reminder of how intact this savanna landscape remains.
