Bosnia and Herzegovina: 4 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
Four Palearctic ecoregions meet in Bosnia and Herzegovina, three of them temperate broadleaf and mixed forest. Pannonian mixed forests reach the northern lowlands along the Sava, the Balkan mixed forests cover much of the interior, and the Dinaric Mountains mixed forests run along the high karst spine, an ecoregion assessed as able to reach half protected. In the south, the Illyrian deciduous forests bring a Mediterranean-biome influence up from the Adriatic. The result is a mostly continental forest climate - cold winters, warm summers, good rainfall - grading to milder, drier sub-Mediterranean conditions toward Herzegovina. Deciduous woodland trees and shrubs are at home through most of the country, while the southern valleys can carry plants that would not survive a Dinaric winter.
