Belgium

Belgium: 2 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Two temperate broadleaf and mixed forest ecoregions share Belgium: the European Atlantic mixed forests across the low-lying north and coast, and the Western European broadleaf forests through the hillier south. Both rank Nature Could Recover, and both describe a mild, maritime-influenced climate without extremes, naturally clothed in oak-and-beech-country deciduous woodland. The gradient within the country is gentle, from softer, ocean-buffered conditions near the coast to slightly more continental winters in the uplands. That makes Belgium straightforward, forgiving ground for the hardy temperate palette: broadleaf trees, woodland shrubs, spring ephemerals, and shade perennials all sit squarely within their natural climate here, and plantings that rebuild native mixed-forest structure work with the grain of both ecoregions.
