Belarus

Belarus: 2 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

Belarus lies wholly within temperate broadleaf and mixed forest, split between two large ecoregions: the Sarmatic mixed forests across the north and the Central European mixed forests in the south, including the great Polesian lowlands. The boundary between them is a gradual one, the Sarmatic side leaning more toward conifer-hardwood mixtures, the Central European side toward oak and hornbeam country. The climate is humid continental throughout, cold snowy winters and warm summers, with no dry season to plan around. That makes for straightforward temperate gardening: hardy deciduous trees, conifers, and cold-tolerant perennials all do well, winter hardiness is the main selection filter, and moisture-loving plants find a natural home in the country's extensive wetlands and river lowlands.
