Bahrain

Bahrain: one ecoregion. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

One ecoregion accounts for all of Bahrain: the Arabian-Persian Gulf coastal plain desert, a Palearctic deserts and xeric shrublands unit that runs along the Gulf's low, sandy, salt-crusted shore. That places the island firmly in hot desert country, with intense summer heat, high coastal humidity, scant rainfall, and saline soils shaped by the surrounding shallow sea. Native vegetation is sparse halophytic shrubland and salt-marsh fringe, and any richer planting has always depended on groundwater, historically the springs that fed Bahrain's famous date gardens. For gardeners the working constraints are salt, heat, and water: salt-tolerant and true desert species succeed on their own, while anything else needs irrigation and often improved soil. The ecoregion rates Nature Could Reach Half Protected.
