Antarctica
Antarctica: 15 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.
Landscape and climate
Every one of Antarctica's fifteen ecoregions is tundra, from the Northwest Antarctic Peninsula tundra through the Transantarctic Mountains tundra to small coastal slivers like Adelie Land, and all fifteen sit in the Half Protected tier. Vegetation on the continent is restricted to the ice-free margins, where the tundra biome takes its sparsest form: mosses, lichens, and algae on exposed rock, concentrated on the peninsula and the Scotia Sea Islands. There is no gardening here in any conventional sense, and no naturalized flora to draw on. The value of these ecoregions for plant reference is as the extreme end of the cold spectrum, a baseline against which every other tundra and alpine region on the site can be read.
