American Samoa

American Samoa: one ecoregion. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

One ecoregion covers American Samoa: the Samoan tropical moist forests, the tropical moist broadleaf forest system of the Samoan archipelago, ranked as able to reach half protected. The territory's steep volcanic islands rise straight from the Pacific under a warm, humid, rain-fed climate with little seasonal swing, and the native vegetation is rainforest from the shoreline to the ridgelines. Planting conditions follow directly: year-round growth, abundant moisture, and salt wind and cyclone exposure as the practical hazards rather than drought or cold. Slope and soil depth matter more than season, and the island setting puts a premium on the native forest flora, since isolated Pacific ecosystems like this one are especially vulnerable to introduced species that escape gardens.
