Algeria

Algeria: 10 ecoregions. Each with its climate now and toward 2050, and its conservation tier.

Landscape and climate

The Sahara accounts for most of Algeria's ten ecoregions: the East, South, and West Sahara deserts, the North Saharan Xeric Steppe and Woodland, the West Saharan montane xeric woodlands of the interior massifs, and Saharan halophytics in salt depressions, with the Sahelian Acacia savanna just touching the far south. The inhabited north is another world: Mediterranean woodlands and forests along the coast, Mediterranean dry woodlands and steppe behind them, and pockets of Mediterranean conifer and mixed forests in the mountains. Gardening Algeria therefore splits cleanly in two. The coastal belt supports classic Mediterranean planting, drought-adapted evergreens and winter-rainfall bulbs, while everything south of the Atlas demands true desert tolerance or irrigation, with date-palm oasis culture the traditional answer.
