Uma ave que parece pertencer a uma floresta tropical e que, em vez disso, passa os verões em bosques abertos do oeste, de coníferas e de coníferas com carvalhos. O macho reprodutor é amarelo e preto, com a cabeça lavada de vermelho-alaranjado, cor que obtém das presas em vez de produzir. Estes sanhaços capturam insetos na copa durante a reprodução e passam bastante para frutos mais adiante no ano.

Breeds in open ponderosa woodland and takes insects from the canopy through the summer. It is a broad woodland forager rather than a pine specialist, so the tie is to the open stand structure as much as the tree.
Distribuição
Reproduz-se em bosques abertos de coníferas e em florestas mistas de coníferas e carvalhos do oeste da América do Norte, do sul do Alasca e dos Territórios do Noroeste para o sul pelas Rochosas e pelas cadeias do Pacífico até a Baixa Califórnia e o oeste do Texas. É um migrante de longa distância de verdade, invernando do México à Costa Rica.
