Trepadeira pequena, de barriga ruiva, própria de piceas, abetos, tsugas e pinheiros, e a de distribuição mais setentrional de sua família na América do Norte. Escava o próprio buraco em madeira morta macia e depois passa resina pegajosa de conífera em volta da entrada, atravessando o vão em um mergulho limpo para não tocar a própria defesa. Nos anos em que a safra de cones do norte falha, abandona por completo a faixa de coníferas e aparece muito ao sul de sua área habitual.

Reproduz-se em florestas de coníferas do Canadá e do Alasca e para o sul pelas Montanhas Rochosas, pelas cadeias do Pacífico, pelos Grandes Lagos e pelos Apalaches até as florestas de picea e abeto das montanhas meridionais. A área de invernada é instável por natureza: nos anos de safra fraca as aves irrompem bem ao sul da floresta de reprodução.
