Reproduz-se em florestas de coníferas do Alasca, do Canadá, das montanhas do oeste e do norte dos Estados Unidos, além dos Apalaches. Fora da estação reprodutiva é irruptivo mais do que migratório no sentido comum: quando a safra de semente do norte falha, os bandos avançam bem para o sul e o leste do continente, e nos anos bons quase não se deslocam.
