Residente nas montanhas do oeste da América do Norte, do interior da Colúmbia Britânica e de Alberta para o sul pelas Rochosas, pela Grande Bacia e pela Sierra Nevada até a Baixa Califórnia, sobretudo em florestas de pinheiro-ponderosa, abeto-de-douglas, abetos verdadeiros e pinheiro-lodgepole. Algumas aves descem de altitude nos invernos rigorosos.
