A castanha-dos-prados (Maniola jurtina) é uma das borboletas de campo mais abundantes da Europa, e distribui-se da Europa ao sul dos 62° N pelo norte da África, Ásia Menor, Iraque e a leste até o Irã. Os machos são de um pardo escuro com um pequeno ocelo apical na asa anterior; as fêmeas são mais vistosas, com uma ampla mancha alaranjada fulva que rodeia um ocelo maior. Os adultos visitam centáureas (Centaurea), cardos (Cirsium), escabiosas (Scabiosa, Succisa) e silvas (Rubus), enquanto as lagartas se alimentam à noite de diversas gramíneas de folha fina, como festucas (Festuca), poas (Poa) e dáctilo (Dactylis glomerata). Os jardins e cemitérios com erva alta não cortada e áreas abertas de flores silvestres sustentam ambas as fases de sua vida.

Meadow brown larvae feed nocturnally on fine-leaved grasses and sheep fescue is squarely in that class. This is the relationship that makes the case for an unmown sheep fescue area rather than a mown one: the butterfly needs the grass to be rough and standing, not clipped.
