O esquilo-vermelho barulhento e territorial das florestas boreais e de montanha de coníferas, e a contraparte oriental do esquilo-de-douglas da costa do Pacífico. A partir do fim do verão corta os cones verdes antes que possam abrir e os estoca em um depósito: um monte úmido de escamas roídas ao pé de uma árvore, onde os cones permanecem fechados e a semente se conserva pelo inverno. Cada esquilo defende um depósito, e não deixa ninguém esquecer disso.

The interior counterpart, taking over from the Douglas squirrel east of the Cascade crest through the Rocky Mountain range of the interior form of grand fir, and caching green cones in the same way. Which squirrel you see in a grand fir stand is a reliable indicator of which side of the mountains you are standing on.
