Large-leaved lime
Tilia platyphyllos
A large deciduous tree, called large-leaved lime in Britain and bigleaf linden in North America, native across central and southern Europe to the Caucasus, Türkiye and Iran, and in Britain only in England and Wales. Its leaves are big, heart-shaped and downy underneath, and in early summer it hangs small clusters of fragrant, pale yellow flowers, each cluster on a narrow leafy bract, that bees work heavily; the leaves turn yellow in fall. NC State Extension and the Missouri Botanical Garden give 60 to 80 feet tall and 30 to 50 feet wide. It prefers alkaline to neutral, moist but well-drained soil and tolerates drought, urban conditions and hard pruning. Aphids on the leaves often drip sticky honeydew onto whatever is underneath.
