Scarlet firethorn
Pyracantha coccinea
A stiff, thorny evergreen shrub from southern Europe and western Asia, grown for its heavy crops of orange-red berries from late summer into winter and as an impenetrable hedge or a shrub trained flat against a wall. Clusters of white flowers in spring have an unpleasant smell. It is susceptible to scab and fire blight, so choose a resistant cultivar. Birds eat the berries and spread the seed: it has naturalised across much of the United States, and the California Invasive Plant Council lists it as a limited invasive in California. Check your local invasive list, and consider a native shrub instead.
