Stone pine
Pinus pinea
A Mediterranean evergreen pine whose mature branches form a broad, umbrella-like crown. NC State Extension gives a height of 40 to 60 feet and spread of 20 to 40 feet. It prefers sun and drainage, tolerates drought once established and produces the edible seeds sold as pine nuts. Young trees may be sold for seasonal indoor display, but they eventually outgrow that role.
